Tenants of Graduate Student Recruitment / Qualifications for Applications

Common qualifications required for applications to each graduate school:

  • Graduate Degrees
  • Doctoral degrees

Required qualifications may exist outside of the following depending on the admissions system (including grade requirements, etc.). For further details, please see Methods of Selection.

Graduate Program (Master’s degree)

Applicants must meet one of the following six requirements.

  1. Have a bachelor’s degree or expect to receive one
  2. Have completed 16 years of schooling overseas
  3. Have been recommended by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  4. Been recognized as having earned superior grades for the credits taken while at Kokugakuin University for three years or more

Note: Students who enter into graduate school in their third year of their undergraduate experience will be considered to have left their old Faculty.

  1. Be at least 22 years old, meet any of the following requirements, and have Kokugakuin University recognize you as having achieved knowledge equivalent to a university degree after an individual inspection of your qualifications.
    1. Be a high school or junior college graduate
    2. Be a vocational school graduate, or graduate of any other type of school
    3. Be a graduate of the Japanese campus of an overseas university, or an overseas school
  2. Be otherwise recognized as having knowledge equivalent to a university education

Note: the inspection of qualifications required for numbers 5 and 6 above shall take place under the following conditions.

Inspection date

 Spring (Graduate School of Letters, Law, and Economics): August 26 (Fri.)

 Spring (Graduate School of Letters, Law, and Economics): January 10 (Tue.)

Those wishing to apply should submit the following documents by 16:00 on August 5 (Fri.) for the Autumn, and 16:00 on December 16 (Fri.) for Spring.

You can confirm information on the inspection of qualifications at the Graduate School Office.

  1. Inspection of Qualifications Application (Kokugakuin University Form)
  2. Proof of Graduation (Kokugakuin University Form) – must not be a copy (attach a Japanese translation if the proof of graduation is in a foreign language)
  3. Transcripts (From your university department/faculty) – must not be a copy (attach a Japanese translation if the proof of graduation is in a foreign language)
  4. A copy of your Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU; Japanese) or your Japanese Language Proficiency Test results (only for foreign exchange students)
  • Japan Exchange Student Test results must be from FY 2015 (June or November) or FY2016 (June or November) from the test carried out by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
  • Japanese Language Proficiency Test results must be from FY2015 (July or December) or FY2016 (July) from the tests carried out by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services within Japan or the Japan Foundation overseas.

Note: If you recently took the test around the time of your application, Kokugakuin University must be notified of results by the date of the inspection of your qualifications.

Note: 2) and 3) are limited to documents issued within three months of the time of application.

Doctoral Course (PhD)

Applicants must meet one of the following four requirements:

  1. Have a graduate degree or expect to receive one
  2. Have received a graduate degree overseas, or an equivalent degree
  3. Have been recommended by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  4. Be otherwise recognized as having knowledge equivalent to a graduate school education
