Steps for Promotion of International Exchange at Kokugakuin University

In 1994, Kokugakuin University set up the International Exchange Committee for the promotion of academic and cultural exchange with overseas universities and research institutes in order to develop and enhance research and education. In 1995, the International Exchange Programs Office was established.

Sending Students Overseas

The origins of our international education exchange program can be traced back to the short-term overseas study program at University of Kent in the UK. Through exchanges with people of different cultures and experiences, more than 100 students each year rediscover Japanese culture from a global point of view, gaining some wonderful experiences which broaden their vision and feelings as internationally-minded people.

Acceptance of Students from Overseas

In 1991, we started to accept privatelyfi nanced overseas students in our undergraduate school. Currently a total of 150 foreign students including exchange students are studying at Kokugakuin University’s undergraduate and graduate schools. In 1999 the Kokugakuin Short-Term Exchange Program (K-STEP) was launched for exchange students from partner universities whose Japanese language ability is not at college level. Under this program, courses are conducted in English with the aim of educating students to deeply understand Japanese culture and society, and to promote exchange with the students of Kokugakuin University.
